Capatcha EP Process

This is a brief explanation of the process that created my Capatcha E.P.

The first step was choosing the 5 captcha codes from myspace
The 5 were.

I then typed these into text edit and used the speech synthesis on the Mac to read the codes then record that into a new file.

This file was then imported into Ableton Live then each one was cut up into either 1 or 2 bar loops.

The next step was to convert these audio files in a pattern for the tb-303

This process was based on position of the transients in the sound file in relation to the 16 steps on the tb303 pattern

This is the first wave form

and from that this is the tb-303 pattern

Where a part of the soundwave falls on a 16th be translated as a note, where there is no soundwave on a 16th be translated as a rest, if it crosses 2 parts be translated as a tie, a loud part of soundwave will be translated as an accent, if the volume goes up be translated as a slide up and the reverse will be translated as a slide down.

That was the general rule I applied to all the patterns, sometimes there was a bit of approximation but in the most part I tried to keep the tb303 pattern generation process the same throughout.

The other use of the capatcha code audio was for fill in or atmospheric sounds, in the first two tracks I used the audio pretty much unaffected.

I also sent it to sound responsive plugins in other channels , I made a lot of use from the MDA plugins, they have an audio to bass tracker and a vocoder which features in the other tracks.

I also used some vowel based EQs to shape the distrorted voice sounds into more of a singing sound.

There was also liberal use of delay and reverb to create a sound smear to translate the computer voice into more of a pad sound.

You can grab the MDA plugins here, they are free and there are a lot of useful tools in there.

You can listen to the result capatcha ep on my bandcamp site
